When I think of Christmas, I think about all of the traditions my family had as I grew up. For the longest time, we would go to our local tree farm and pick out the biggest tree they had. We’d haul it home and decorate it with all of trinkets and ornaments we’d accumulated over many years and it was the coziest feeling.
This year I was feeling that longing for that cozy Holiday feel – my heart swelling at the thought of all those magical memories we made growing up. Nostalgia is such a bittersweet feeling and I knew I wanted to come up with Christmas Minis that felt vintage and comforting. This year I set-up three different backdrops for my clients that I thought captured the essence of a classic, vintage holiday feel. My wonderful clients, the McKinney family, brought all the vibes and I knew I needed to post a detailed blog of the thought process behind this years set up.

Starting at the old farmhouse my family owns, I found the prettiest Frasier Fir and real garland to decorate the front porch in this classic Christmas look. Nothing too fancy about it but I wanted my trees and garland to be the real thing because the smells and feel of it all brought me back to my childhood. I wanted that same feeling to resonate with my clients too.

The next set-up was much more simple but beautiful all the same. But honestly, what helps bottle up this nostalgic feeling isn’t the backdrops or decor but the people I get to capture. Their warm smiles, wool sweaters and magic they create by just existing in the moment with one another.

My minis couldn’t be complete without a touch of a modern moment with a lush, draped ivory backdrop and fresh white pine Christmas trees. While it might be a bit less nostalgic, you still get that cozy feeling when you look at these images. Nothing over the top with the decor but a thoughtful intentionality with the texture of the fabrics.

It excites me to create and design things that I resonate with. I’ve never done Christmas minis to this scale and can’t wait to expand on this next year! My goal is to capture my clients in ways that showcase their personalities and unique relationships with one another. To document and tell a story beyond a perfect, smiling image because we are so much more than that.
