If you’re the kind of couple who craves a wedding that’s as thrilling and unique as your love story, Iceland might just be your dream destination. Imagine saying your vows beneath the dance of the Northern Lights, with the rugged beauty of glaciers, volcanoes, and waterfalls as your backdrop. For the adventurous spirit, Iceland offers a wedding experience that’s anything but ordinary—where dramatic landscapes and untamed nature create an epic setting for a truly unforgettable elopement. Iceland is known for it’s unpredictable weather, but don’t let that stop you from embracing the adventure and letting the elements enhance your love story. In this article, I’ll give you a step-by-step guide on how you can elope in Iceland and why it’s the perfect fit for the wanderlust couple!
Surprisingly, eloping in Iceland isn’t as difficult as it may seem, but it does require some planning.
Step One: Research and Plan
Do you want to get married in front of a waterfall, by a glacier, with a dramatic landscape cascading behind you? The options are endless. You’ll also want to consider the level of privacy you’d like to have – Iceland is quire touristy but there are many secluded spots throughout the country.
Another thing to consider is the time of year. The summer time in Iceland offers lush greens, cooler weather and longer days so lighting is never an issue. You may experience frequent rain during this time too but honestly, we love rainy photoshoot over here. Icelandic winters are incredible and worth the journey but do require more planning for harsher road conditions.
Step Two: Set a Budget
The Land of Ice and Fire isn’t always the cheapest of options but it’s certainly less than a large wedding! It’s always important to know how much you are willing to spend on flights, accommodations, excursions, hair and makeup, your outfits, photography and other activities.
Step Three: Choose a Date
Decide on the time of year you want to elope. Like I said earlier, Iceland’s weather is unpredictable, so choose a season that aligns with your vision and be prepared for varying conditions. But don’t be afraid of a little rain – it can make for some moody pictures!
Step Four: Obtain a Marriage License
To legally get married in Iceland, you’ll need to get a marriage license from the Icelandic government. Submit your application online or by mail to the National Registry of Iceland. Make sure to check the requirements for documentation, such as passports, birth certificates, and proof of single status.
Step Five: Find an Officiant
You’ll need someone to officiate your ceremony. You can choose between a local officiant, a wedding planner, or a friend or family member who has been legally authorized to perform weddings in Iceland. If you’d like to just have a more symbolic wedding, you can have anyone officiate your wedding but know it will not be recognized as legal in Iceland. There are even organizations in Iceland that will help match you with officiants which is a great option!
Step Six: Book Accommodations and Travel
Go ahead and reserve your flights, accommodations and transportation. Iceland is pretty easy to navigate and I recommend renting a car at the airport for getting around. Depending on the time of year and where you would like to visit, consider renting a 4×4 to navigate those difficult terrains.
Airbnbs or Hotels are endless throughout Iceland and depending on where you’d like to get married, you can find some cozy accommodations for a romantic trip.
Step Seven: Hire Vendors
Your wedding day should be documented perfectly so take the time to find a photographer who can help you plan something beautiful for your special day and also capture it. A great elopement photographer knows how to help you plan, obtain necessary permits and can even source other vendors for you if needed!
For example, a full 8-hour elopement day photographer may cost between $4,500 – $7,500 dollars but this typically includes a few locations that you can get some epic photos around the country!
Step Eight: Plan the Ceremony
Work with your officiant or other vendors to customize your vows and ceremony. Decide if you want any special elements like a symbolic gesture or a specific location.
Step Nine: Prepare for the Weather
Pack accordingly for Iceland’s unpredictable climate. Bring warm clothing, waterproof gear, and layers to stay comfortable throughout your adventure. Don’t be afraid of rain on your wedding day but have a few extra days planned in case you’d like to do extending photoshoots to get those iconic shots you’ve been envisioning.
Step 10: Legalize Your Marriage
After the ceremony, ensure your marriage is officially registered with Icelandic authorities. You may need to follow up to receive your marriage certificate. You’ll also want to do this in the U.S. or whatever country you live in as well. See local requirements for this step!
Step 11: Celebrate and Enjoy!!
Once everything is in place, enjoy your unique and adventurous elopement in one of the most breathtaking locations on Earth. Explore Iceland, take in the stunning landscapes, and celebrate your love in style. Get adventurous and explore different parts of the country for some amazing photos to document your big day!
